My connections to the net are redundant and extreme. It all started with a 128k
ISDN connection dialup and for voice traffic through GTE (a POTS analog
line was never installed once I moved into the house!).
Now to this add two cable modems, one through @Home and the other which is a
Microwave Point to Point (MMDS) two-way 2.4 GHz wireless setup. One cable modem runs
my web site and mail servers; the other handles the Internet traffic to all of
the computers in the house!
It's rare that both cable modems go down, but if
they should then the ISDN takes over. Otherwise the ISDN feeds a phone system
to give two voice lines. A third line on the phone switch is a H.323 gateway
which allows calls made over the Internet to be picked up on any phone in the
house.
Does this sound like a setup that rivals most businesses? Maybe it does
considering you have to dial a "9" to get an outside line in the Gadget Guy
Household!
